Message from the Author
I've walked the walk in professional selling, building a business from scratch. Here's how I got to that point. My sales career has spanned a period of close to twenty four years. My first sales position was with a major retail chain. I had a commission-based selling position, selling suits, shoes, even lingerie, using no formal training, relying on instinct. At the time, I didn't claim to be a sales professional, so I didn't seek any formal sales training. I landed my second sales position after working for the retail chain, selling staffing services. A few years went by, a couple of company changes, and today at age forty something, I am a co-owner of a manufacturing company with my primary responsibilities being sales and marketing for the company. The company is successful. It started as an idea ten years ago and today, I have a better life style than I have ever had. My personal and family opportunities have increased dramatically. So I'm very pleased to say it has been a good move for me and I am satisfied to this point with my accomplishments and my career in sales. My success in professional selling, I feel qualifies me to write a book about training someone to sell. Training Dana to Selling Success is written in journal form and will cover the first year's day to day experiences of training Dana, a college graduate. The book is written this way in order to present a more realistic account of what really happens, in real time, as well as capture the thoughts, feelings, and emotions from both the trainer's and trainee's side. The material will be presented as realistic as possible in order to enhance the reader's interest and learning experience. Call it a "reality show on paper" if you will. The pro of this book is that it's not theoretical. The events are documented as they occur. The reader can "cherry pick" from the readings what will be helpful knowledge for them. My experience in being a student and trainer of the sales profession has also shown me that it's not a good idea to learn from a sales trainer, and then take the material so literally as to try to duplicate or do exactly as the trainer suggests. Selling is an art and requires creativity and personalization. In short, we have to be ourselves to much extent so prospects and customers don't see through us. It's a balance of being willing to change and learn; at the same time never losing our identity, as well as our personal charisma.
